Sod Care Guide

Watering

The first few weeks after installation are the most critical time to water. Get this right and your lawn will be off to a lifetime of healthy growth.

• Start within 30 minutes of installation, ideally after each irrigation zone is covered.
• Week 1: Water morning, noon, and late afternoon. Apply at least 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch of water per day to ensure the soil beneath the turf stays wet.
• Probe the soil to confirm moisture has penetrated at least 4 inches. Ideally 3 to 4 inches beneath the surface should have enough moisture.
• Week 2: Water about 1/4 inch of water per day, across 2 to 3 watering sessions. Soil should be saturated without puddling.
• Week 3: Start a normal watering routine to encourage deep root growth.
• Watch for gray spots on your lawn. If any areas turn gray, apply water immediately by turning on your sprinklers or using a hose.

Mowing

• New sod can be mowed about a week after installation, or when it looks ready.
• Use a push mower if possible and set the cutting height to 4 inches.
• Avoid using a riding mower for 3 weeks. They are heavy and their tires can damage fresh sod.
• You can resume normal mowing 2 to 3 weeks after installation. Mow a little higher than normal the first two times.

Fertilizing

• Feed your lawn with the proper fertilizer 3 to 4 times during the growing season.
• Use slow-release or controlled-release nitrogen when possible, especially during spring and fall applications.
• Wait 4 to 6 weeks after laying new sod to fertilize your lawn. This allows it to establish a strong root system. Applying fertilizer too early (within 30 days) can burn the delicate, shallow roots.
• Once the sod has rooted (you cannot easily lift the turf), apply a starter fertilizer.
• We recommend a 15-15-15 nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium fertilizer.
• Spring, summer, and fall: 5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft.
